The Name

"Terasem" translates from a melange of root words into "Earth seed." This expresses our belief that the earth is like a seed. To reach its full potential it must be nurtured, protected, diversified and disseminated. Similarly, each person is like a seed. We believe geoethical nanotechnology and personal cyberconsciousness are the tools to enable each person to also be nurtured, protected, diversified and disseminated.

The word "Movement" is added to our organization's name because Terasem is fundamentally a cause to believe in, much like one would believe in a religion, philosophy or political cause. We believe the wholly rational approach of Terasem is a philosphy that can span all religions, as well as progressive humanism, empiricism and the scientific method. Accordingly, we envision the Terasem Movement as a "transreligion" -- a body of beliefs that transcends many different belief systems.

The Terasem logo features an infinity symbol to represent the universal potential of self-replicating nanotechnology and cyberconsciousness. The logo also displays a digital spelling of "joy" to express our belief that happiness is the purpose of life and that technology is essential to achieving that goal. The logo contains a series of concentric circles to reflect the fundamental importance of geoethics. The concentric circles exemplify the concept that each of us bears a responsibility to our larger community. Consequently, nanotechnology and cyberconsciousness must be developed with full regard for their socio-physical environments, for diversity, and for unity.
